Celebrate 10 years of Flat Friends!

24th August 2014, a woman named Gilly started a Facebook group. It was going to be a space where women like her could chat about living without reconstruction after mastectomy surgery. Initially there were just a handful of women Gilly had met online in a group based in America. As the months went by, and the group grew, stories emerged of women facing ‘Flat Denial’. So, Gilly set up the UK’s only charity dedicated to supporting women who have had mastectomy surgery without breast reconstruction, and those facing that decision on 11th August 2016. Our Facebook group now supports 3,000 women, our patient information booklet is available from all good hospitals and breast care units, patient-led support groups meet regularly across the UK and British Isles, and we collaborate with other charities, organisations, and universities to improve experiences and surgical outcomes for women having single or double mastectomies and those living without reconstruction.
