We love Pancakes!
Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday is the last day to use eggs, milk, and fats before beginning a fast for Lent. For hundreds of years, in many Christian countries, pancakes have been the perfect way to use up these ingredients.
Pancakes unite the UK for one day each year, whether we are embarking on a 40 day fast or not! Sweet and savoury, vegan and gluten free, American and Scotch, protein-packed and 5-a-day: there’s a pancake for everyone! …maybe we should enjoy them all year round?
Flat as a Pancake
At a Flat Friends get together, Julie mentioned that she and her family celebrate her being ‘flat as a pancake’ every Pancake Day, and wondered if others did the same. An amazing idea was born! On Pancake Day in 2022 we encouraged everyone to Celebrate Flat by sharing their pancake creations on social media. They included special pancake recipes, amazing topping combinations, decorations, and even pancake art!
We hope that ‘Flat as a Pancake’ Day will become an annual celebration for Flatties everywhere!

Pancake Plans
Five Top Tips
- 1. For a more even texture, your basic milk, eggs, and flour batter should rest for 30 minutes before you start cooking.
- 2. Some people are allergic to - or do not eat - milk, eggs, wheat flour. Offer alternatives and keep a note of the ingredients you have used. Or host a ‘Bring and Share’ event!
- 3. If you’re feeding lots of people, then you can cook your pancakes in advance. Layer them between sheets of kitchen roll.
- 4. Pancakes can be reheated in the microwave. Depending on the wattage of your microwave they will need approximately 10 seconds per pancake, or one minute for a stack of 4-6 pancakes.
- 5. Not confident in the kitchen? Buy ready-made pancakes...or host a Pancake Bake Off and let others do the cooking while you get the job of Head Judge!
