International Womens Day 2022 #BreakTheBias

Imagine a world free of bias, prejudice and stereotypes. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. A world where both conscious and unconscious gender bias about what women should look like does not influence healthcare professionals, hospital trusts, and decision makers against women who need mastectomy surgery.
Flat Friends is committed to:
  • Raising awareness of surgical decisions made with bias
  • Striving for inclusive behaviours and policies
  • Promoting diverse representation of women
  • Challenging gender stereotypes Taking action for equality

Flat Friends’ survey published in 2021 found that 53% of women don’t feel informed of all the surgery options available to them after their mastectomy:

Less than a third of women (32%) are given information about going fully flat i.e. having the cancer-free breast removed to achieve symmetry, with only 11% offered it as an option.

92% of women denied surgery to go fully flat are dissatisfied with how they look in the mirror compared to 6% who were allowed.

We are moving to a very exciting time in history where the world now expects diversity, equity and inclusion. Together we can forge women’s equality and challenge discrimination. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.
