Sally-Anne’s fundraiser for Flat Friends UK

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer 13 years ago, I didn’t know whether I would make it to 60 & I’ve lost lots of fabulous friends in that period. I was diagnosed with a very aggressive occult breast cancer in March 2012. I had a single MX, full ANC, 6 rounds of chemo, 20 rounds of radiotherapy & 10 years of tamoxifen. In Dec 2013 I had a second mx & Nov 2015 had my ovaries removed to kick me into menopause having been peri-menopausal for 15 years!!

So, in the words of my friend Rachel, I am getting up and making the most of every day and holidaying every month of my 60th Birthday year. My final trip was a cruise from Rome to Miami, so to celebrate my 60th and Flat Friend’s 10th birthday, I ran 10 5ks on the top deck running track of our ship as we sailed.

I chose to fundraise for Flat Friends to celebrate that for 10 years they have supported & advocated for women who have not reconstructed after mastectomy. I’ve been a member of the group for 10 years & was a founder Trustee and during that time have seen first hand the brilliant work they do. But there is still important work to do. I’ve been a Breast Cancer Now volunteer for 10 years supporting women post mastectomy and there are still women fighting to have symmetry surgery down rather than up via reconstruction. These funds will help Flat Friends not only support thousands of women coming to terms with their new bodies but to fund research and advocacy so that in the future women don’t have to fight for the surgery they want.

You can donate (and set up your own fundraiser!) at Just Giving.
